Field trip to Petland and Great Harvest
Thank you to one of our families who helped us with setting up a field trip yesterday to Kahala's Petland and Great Harvest. Also, thank you to the parents who came along for the fun. We hope that you enjoyed it as much as we did.
The class was split up into 2 groups. 1 group went to Great Harvest and the other group went to Petland. While at Great Harvest, we learned how bread is made, what ingredients is needed, how they mixed the bread and how to form the bread. While at Petland, we got to see the store's doggie, some bunny rabbits, different types of fishes, a girl and boy jackson chameleons, and some birds. And at the end, we bought 6 Sunset Coral Platy for our fish tank next to our listening center.
We had a lot of fun on this field trip and we can't wait to go on next one.
Chinese New Year & Cement Pour
Last week was a busy one for us and for the rest of the school. On Monday we celebrated Chinese New Year with a lion dance. It was fun learning about lion. The lion has 1 horn and 4 legs (with 2 people inside of it).
We got to feed the lion some lei see to bring us some good luck during the year of the dragon.
Our teachers hung a head of cabbage at the front door for the lion to eat. Boy, was he a hungry lion and a messy one too.
On Wednesday morning, we got to watch the construction guys poor cement for the new classrooms. It was amazing to see how much cement trucks they needed.
And last but not least, thank you parents for joining us for our Chinese New Year potluck. There was a lot of good food and good company.
Zoo Field Trip
This pass Tuesday, we went to the Honolulu Zoo. Thank you to the parents who joined us on our adventure.
We got to walk around for a little while before we met our Zoo Teacher. We walked passed homes of the different monkeys lived. Some of us got to see the alligator hiding in the bushes. Saw the gharial (a type of crocodile) sitting in the water. And we got to see the new home for the elephants. We met our Zoo Teacher, Aunty Amanda at the giraffe statue. She took us to the Zoo Classroom. We listened to her and learned many different things about fossils and some other neat things.
After we were done, we went to the Keiki Zoo to look at some different farm animals and pet some goats. We all wanted to bring a goat back to school with us for a new room 5 pet.
When we were done, we found a nice shady area under the trees to eat our lunch. On the way out of the zoo, we got to see some of the tigers sleeping and roaming around it's cage.
Aunty Amanda showing us a fossil of a elephant's tooth.
Aunty Amanda getting ready to share some other neat things.
Next week is going to be another busy week for room 5. On Monday morning, the entire school will be having a lion dance presentation. On Wednesday, there will be a cement pour for the new classrooms. On Thursday, room 5 will be having our Chinese New Year Potluck. And on Friday, it's parent/teacher conferences (NO CHILDREN).
Enjoying our second week of the New Year
On Thursday, the children learned how to cut out snowflakes to decorate the wooden structure of the home center. They were amazed to see their snowflake after they were finished.
Also, the children got to be creative and make a picture with recycled buttons and other things. It was a chance for them to think of what they could make with the buttons.
The next two weeks will be a busy one for room 5. Please stay tune to our blog to see what we're up to. Thank you!

Farewell Field of Dreams
Yesterday during outdoor play, room 5 spent the last day of on the Field of Dreams. The children spent the time running around, rolling down the “mini” hill, exploring the plants and the trees. Some of the girls found a low hanging ulu, which they rocked and treated it like a baby. The boys enjoyed rolling down the hill, running around and climbing a tree.
After tomorrow’s ground breaking ceremony, the field of dreams will be closed to the construction of the two new cottage classrooms and the Town Hall. We look forward to viewing, and learning about the many things dealing with construction.
Here is a group shot that we would like to share with you.
Love,
Room 5
